The Great Resignation: How to Attract, Retain, and Engage Inventors

The Great Resignation, The Great Reshuffle, the Big Quit. Whatever you want to call it there is a significant trend in the United States where employees are voluntarily resigning from their jobs – en masse.

A poll from Citrix in September found that 35 percent of tech workers leaving a job cited burnout. The trend has engineers questioning if the stress is worth it. It used to be about the campus, the perks, the money. But if you are sitting at home to work, what is separating this job from another job?

Increasingly, employers are not competing based on the perks or amenities they offer. Instead, they are competing based on the overall experience of being part of an organization. It is about creating a culture where the inventors are seen, heard, and valued.

“Great Place to Work-Certified” company O.C. Tanner studied employee engagement and, in a survey, asked what is the most important thing that your manager or company does that would cause you to produce great work?

37% of respondents said that more personal recognition would encourage them to produce better work more often. The study showed that affirmation, feedback, and rewards motivated the most.

With most employees still working from home, your engineers can feel invisible or unappreciated for their work faster. It is crucial that you have a culture where you are recognizing them for the extra work they put in. The more specific you are at the recognition, the more likely you are to get repeat behavior…and employee satisfaction. Recognition has always been important in an R&D culture, but today it is essential.
